About Taliparamba Church

From the beginning of 1960’s, Syrian Catholics from various places began to settle at Taliparamba for various purpose like education, employment and mercantile. At that time they went to Thrichabaran St Paul’s Church and Pushpagiri CMI Church for their religious purposes. On Dec 25 1990, St Mary’s Parish took birth under the Tellicherry Archdiocese. Their dream came true when the foundation stone for the church laid on 2008 August 15. On April 14 2012 the church was opened for the believers by the function presided by Rev: Mar George Valyamattam Metropolitan. On 2013 March 17 he declared the church as a Forane Church and a pilgrim centre.

Facade

Image Accordion ConThe 110 ft. high façade of the Church is beautifully adorned with a 15 ft high Marthoma Crucifix, on the both sides there are two thazhikakudam and above that there are statutes of two angles blowing trumpets which is nearly five feet long. Below that we can see the sculptures of 12 disciples of Jesus made of mosaic glass. In the middle portion there is the full body photo of Virgin Mary made of stainless glass.tent Goes Here! The painting of Holy Mary

The painting of Mother Mary by the renowned artist Louis T Tiffany in 1901 is beautifully depicted at the middle of the façade. It is the picture of Mother Mary standing beside the evergreen tree of life in the heaven. The picture gives the courage in the mind of the believers to overcome the evil powers that creates obstacles in the way of one’s life.

Portico

The beautiful architecture just before the main entrance which is of 805 square feet wide. At the both sides there are beautifully decorated doors dedicated to Nithya Sahaya Matha and St Joseph. The portraits of St Alphonsa and Chavarayachan near the entrance door welcome the believers to the church. The walls of the entrance are quintessentially crafted with variety mosaic glass.

Entrance

The main entrance that welcomes everyone to the sacred church is considered as the replica of the entrance towards heavenly home. The main entrance door which is made of wood measuring 105 square feet wide is decorated with the sculptures of pigeon, as the representation of Holy Spirit on the top, and representation of Holy Mass at various portions made out of wood. On the four doors at the both sides of the church there are icon glass paintings of St.Matthew, St.Mark, St.Luke and St.John.

Hyikkala

Every person’s life is a voyage to the heavenly destiny. The Hyikkala is a representation of this divine journey. Quoting the biblical saying (Quote the biblical saying), the 6350 sq ft wide spacious interior paneling is done with wood.

The Last Supper

Recreation of Davinci’s the Last Supper made of fiber measuring 260 sq feet.

Windows

Proclaiming the sanctity and grandeur of the sanctuary, the stained-glass windows are beautifully crafted. On one side, above the windows, the 9 seasons of the Liturgical Year are depicted, topped with symbols of Old Testament salvation history. On the opposite side, the 7 Sacraments of the Church are portrayed, surmounted by key events of New Testament redemption.

Bema

Spanning an area of 650 square feet, the Bema (Platform of the Word) features an exquisite wooden lectern crafted in the form of an open Holy Bible with four layers. The introductory and concluding rites of the Holy Qurbana, as well as other Sacraments and prayers, are conducted here. Statues of saints are enshrined on either side of the Bema.

Holy Scripture Lecterns

Proclaiming the sanctity and grandeur of the sanctuary, the stained-glass paintings above the windows are magnificently crafted. On one side, the 9 seasons of the Liturgical Year are depicted, surmounted by symbols of Old Testament salvation history. On the other side, the 7 Sacraments of the Church are portrayed, topped with pivotal saving events from the New Testament.

Traditional Oil Lamp

Standing 7.5 feet tall, the traditional oil lamp crowned with the Saint Thomas Cross represents Jesus, the Light of the World.

At the Entrance of the Sanctuary

On either side, intricate relief carvings masterfully depict the Apostle of India proclaiming his faith and the Baptism of Jesus, the Son of God.

The Sanctuary

Spanning an area of 580 square feet, the Sanctuary (Madbaha) is the most sacred part of the church and serves as a symbol of Heaven.

Crucifix

Set against a backdrop reflecting the heavenly glory of a people redeemed through the sacrifice on the Cross, stands the Crucifix—the ultimate expression of Jesus’ supreme sacrifice and limitless love.

The Holy Trinity

Spanning an area of 2,000 square feet, the dome transforms the Sanctuary into a heavenly tabernacle. Adorning its interior is an oil painting of the Most Holy Trinity, enthroned amidst a vast host of angels. Directly below, the Resurrected Christ is depicted on stained glass in such a way that it is mirrored equally on both sides.

Tabernacle

Revealing divine holiness and majesty, the sacred Tabernacle—the most holy part of the church—is exquisitely designed, adorned with sixteen pillars and crowned with three small domes. Inspired by St. Peter’s Basilica, this Tabernacle symbolizes the holy Eucharist being imparted through the Church. Beneath it rests a poignant portrait of Jesus praying in the Garden of Gethsemane.

The Beginning of Salvation History

The Annunciation to the Blessed Virgin Mary and the Annunciation to St. Joseph in his dream are portrayed in oil paintings.

Spanning 30 square feet each, these oil paintings signify their vital roles in salvation history and the sublime glory of their divine calling.

The Altar

Situated at the center of the Sanctuary, the Holy Altar symbolizes the tomb of Jesus. Exquisitely carved with the image of a pelican on the left, the bleeding Holy Face of Jesus in the center, and the ‘Lamb of God’ from the Book of Revelation (Rev 5:12) on the right, these intricate works of art remind us of the profound love of our Lord, who bestowed life and salvation upon us through the Holy Blood shed on the altar of Calvary.

Holy Icons

Most of the sacred images in the church are icons, crafted in the traditional style of Eastern Christian art. Notably, these paintings are uniquely created without shadows.

Way of the Cross

The 14 stations of the ‘Via Sacra’ (Way of the Cross) are masterfully carved on mirror glass, spanning 12 square feet each, and are beautifully installed inside the church.

Stone Cross

Encircling the facade of the octagonal stone cross are carvings depicting the Saint Thomas Cross, Saint Thomas the Apostle, Saint Francis Xavier, along with the saints and blessed of the Church in Kerala: Saint Alphonsa, Saint Kuriakose Elias Chavara, Saint Euphrasia, Saint Mariam Thresia, and Blessed Kunjachan Thevarparambil.

Stone Lamp

Crowned at the top with a cross—the emblem of salvation—this stone lamp is designed to hold 35 wicks simultaneously across five tiers.

Bell Tower

Installed at a height of 65 feet, the church bell weighs 325 kilograms.

Mariyan Stall

A stall arranged to provide religious articles and devotional items for pilgrims visiting the shrine.

Flagpole

Standing at a height of 41 feet, the sacred flagstaff is encased in pure brass and features engraved images of Saint Sebastian, Saint George, Saint Jude, Saint Anthony, Saint Peter, and Saint Paul.

'Mariya Sahayathra' Mother Mary

The sacred statue of Mother Mary visited parish families during the construction period of the church—a true symbol of parish unity. It serves as a holy reminder of those blessed days when the Blessed Virgin Mary resided in homes, interceding for the families. This sacred statue is now enshrined in the Perpetual Adoration Chapel.

Declaration as a Forane Pilgrim Church

On March 17, 2013, Most Rev. Mar George Valiamattam, Metropolitan Archbishop of Tellicherry, declared St. Mary’s Church, Taliparamba, as a Forane Pilgrimage Center.

Historic Visit of the Major Archbishop

On November 4, 2013, Major Archbishop of the Syro-Malabar Church, His Eminence Cardinal Mar George Alencherry, visited the pilgrimage church and unveiled the commemorative plaque.

Mariyan Documentation Centre

A museum and gallery dedicated to the Blessed Virgin Mary, depicting the Church-approved Marian apparitions, major Marian pilgrimage centers in India, diverse artistic portrayals of Mother Mary, visual representations of the Rosary Mysteries, and a captivating recreation of Michelangelo’s world-renowned sculpture, the ‘Pietà’.
